Help for using the CAS Source Index (CASSI) Search Tool

Use this complimentary tool to quickly identify or confirm journal titles and abbreviated titles for a listing of publications indexed by CAS since 1907, including serial and non-serial scientific and technical publications. For brief abbreviations, such as A., Ann., B., Ber., C. and others, found in early chemical literature and other historical reference sources, please use Beyond CASSI.

You can search CASSI for publication information in one of five ways:

  • Publication Title or Abbreviation
  • CODEN
  • ISBN
  • ISSN

Note: There is a limit of 100 answers per search so it is recommended to make your search as specific as possible.

Publication Title or Abbreviation Search

  • Select Title or Abbreviation from the drop-down list of search choices.
  • Type in a text term to conduct a publication title or abbreviation search. The default search will attempt to match the search term in any part of the publication title or abbreviation, but you can specify an exact search by checking the Exact match box. For example, searching chimica could retrieve Chimica Oggi or Thermochimica Acta.
  • Boolean searching is not supported, but entering multiple keywords separated by spaces is interpreted as an implied AND operator. For example, searching organic chemistry could retrieve Bioorganic Chemistry or Current Organic Chemistry.
  • "And" and "&" can be searched interchangeably when included in the publication title. For example, a Title or Abbreviation search for Chemical and Engineering News will yield the same results as Chemical & Engineering News.
  • Wildcard searching is not supported, and you must enter at least two characters to conduct a search.
  • Omit special characters (e.g. β, subscripts, etc.) when searching. For example, when searching for β-Casomorphins, simply enter "Casomorphins" for best results. For NaClO3 , enter "NaClO" for best results.
  • To conduct an exact search, check the Exact match box. Do not place quotation marks around your search term(s). If selecting "Exact match" for an abbreviation, please be sure to include appropriate punctuation (i.e. J. Am. Chem. Soc.).
  • Click Search.

CODEN Search

  • Select CODEN from the drop-down list of choices.
  • Enter the alphanumeric string for the CODEN of interest. A CODEN is a six character, alphanumeric bibliographic code that provides concise, unique and unambiguous identification of the titles of serials and non-serial publications.

  • If you enter a six-character, alphanumeric string this will be treated as an exact search.
  • Click Search.

ISBN Search

  • Select ISBN from the drop-down list of choices.
  • Enter the alphanumeric string for the ISBN of interest. An ISBN (International Standard Book Number) is a unique numeric commercial book identifier based upon a 9-, 10-, or 13-digit code. An ISBN code can consist of 4 or 5 parts, of different lengths, separated by hyphens. Instead of a number, the last digit in an ISBN code can be the letter X.
